US News Highlights the Specific Carbohydrate Diet for Treating Crohn’s

Jeffery Berger was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at the age of 18, and suffered with it into his 20’s. In 1985 his inflammation was so bad that he was hospitalized for two weeks and put on ‘bowel rest’ meaning he had to receive all his nutrition intravenously.

In 1995, he went to a book event in San Francisco. The book? The Specific Carbohydrate Diet by Elaine Gottschall. This diet was designed by Elaine Gottschall specifically for people suffering from IBD just as her daughter did. Through years of scientific research, she released the diet. At the conference Elaine introduced the diet, showed scientific research, and testimonies from IBD patients. After hearing her speak, and acquiring the book, Jeffery was ready to give the diet a try.

The results were so successful that Berger says the SCD diet, “suppressed or reversed my Crohn’s disease (and) led me into remission.” Berger was so moved by the diet and their results; he started the Specific Carbohydrate Diet Association in 2018. This Association, S.C.D.A. has four main goals; to promote the SCD diet information awareness, to unite the SCD community and outreach to others, offer support to those on the SCD diet, and to promote research for the SCD diet. Berger, now 58, has been in remission for the last 20 years.
