Easy Slow Cooker Refined Sugar-Free SCD Apple Butter

Smooth, sweet, and with a hint of baking spice, apple butter is one of my all time favorite fall apple treats.

Traditional apple butter uses brown sugar, which isn’t very gut friendly. My SCD version replaces the brown sugar with honey which gives it a very old fashioned appeal.

If you didn’t know, refined sugar didn’t become readily available in the U.S. until around the 1850’s when canning became popular. Before that, all baked goods primarily used honey. While keeping old traditions alive we incorporate ‘new’ techniques by using the aid of a slow cooker. This makes the recipe much easier and saves you hours of standing over a stove. If you don’t have enough apples, or want a smaller batch, you can easily half this recipe.

I enjoy spreading this apple butter over Danielle Walker’s Cashew Blender Bread, on top of my Easy Grain-Free Waffles and Grain-Free Southern Biscuits. Indulge yourself with this traditional fall apple butter and let it transport you to fall traditions of old.

Ingredients:

5 ½ lbs. red apples, peeled, cored, and quartered, any variety (about 20)

⅓ cup water

1 cup honey

1 Tbsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. nutmeg

½ tsp. clove

¼ tsp. salt

  Method Of Prep:

  1. Gather and prep ingredients.
  2. Start by peeling your apples.
  3. Once peeled, cut into quarters. Then, core each quarter.
  4. Discard the peels and cores.
  5. Place apples in a slow cooker.
  6. In a small bowl add all other ingredients. Whisk to incorporate.
  7. Pour over the apples and use a spoon to mix.
  8. Turn the slow cooker on low and cook for 8 hours.
  9. Stir a few times to ensure even cooking and prevent burning. I like to stir it once an hour.
  10. Once allotted time has passed, carefully use an immersion blender or high-speed blender for 30 seconds to a minute to smooth out the apple butter.
  11. Allow apple butter to cool.
  12. Store in four pint jars, and refrigerate for up to two weeks. Enjoy!
