These old-fashioned apple spice cake doughnuts are one of my all-time favorite fall treats! The soft spongy cake is encompassed by warm baking spices with a touch of sweet apple in the background, making for the perfect flavor combination in each bite! I refer to these as old-fashioned cake doughnuts because they are baked rather than fried, and have a spongier texture that is truer to a cake doughnut rather than a modern glazed doughnut. Think of a krugel, but lighter and less dense. The fall spice mix, apple, and doughnut combination always take me back to my childhood apple picking in the orchard and enjoying hayrides in the crisp Midwest fall. The only thing missing? Hot apple cider. Well don’t worry, I’ve got that covered too! For an extra special treat try pairing these doughnuts with my Slow Cooker English Cranberry Wassail Cider or Hot Apple Cider for the full apple orchard experience!    Â

Ingredients:
2 cups almond flour  Â
¼ cup coconut flour
1 tsp. baking sodaÂ
2 tsp. cinnamon, groundÂ
1 tsp. nutmeg, groundÂ
¼ tsp. clove, groundÂ
â…” cup honeyÂ
¼ cup butter, unsalted and melted
1 cup applesauce, unsweetened Â
2 EggsÂ
 Method Of Prep:
- Gather and prep ingredients.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Grease doughnut mold (silicone or metal) with butter and set aside.
- In a large bowl add almond flour, coconut flour, baking soda, and spices. Mix together to evenly incorporate.
- Next, in a separate bowl combine honey, melted butter, applesauce, and eggs.
- Slowly add your wet ingredients to your dry until thick dough forms.
- Let the batter rest for 5 minutes so the coconut flour can properly absorb the wet ingredients.
- After resting spoon batter into molds. Mine takes about 2-2 ½ tablespoons of batter.
- Carefully spread it evenly with a spatula, or gently shake from side to side to even out.
- Bake for 15-17 minutes or until a toothpick can be inserted and come out clean.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before flipping out of the pan. Depending on your doughnut mold, you may have to use a spatula to loosen the edges so they can come out of the mold.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
